Can I have an Assurance of my Salvation?

Many Christian's from all over around the world lacks assurance of their salvation. I have had dialogue with fellow brethren as to whether they are saved eternally or not. Their reply proves beyond reasonable doubt that they do not know for sure, whether God has saved them eternally unto himself or not. Many of them believe that certain sins can make them lose their salvation, whiles others believe God's word do not give promises of assurance of salvation, hence they lack assurance. It is interesting to know that some Christians also lacks assurance, because they have been taught to believe that having assurance of their salvation, can give them the license to lead a licentious lifestyle.

The reasons some doubt their salvation varies from each person. It is the devil's priority and as part of his stratagems to make you think that you cannot have an assurance of your salvation. I have heard and read testimonies of how certain Christian's who before lacked assurance, as a result, they fell into depression, into a state of hopelessness, felt unloved, but only found freedom when they came to an in-depth understanding of the assurance of their salvation.

How were you saved?

Beloved, you were saved the moment you trusted in Jesus Christ for salvation. You were saved instantaneously the day you believed that Jesus was God incarnate, lived a sinless life, died for your sins, was buried and rose from the dead on the third day according to the scriptures. God saved us by his grace through faith in his unique Son. The bible says: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2: 8-9). When the bible tells us that we are saved through faith in Christ, then that's it, we are saved. If your faith is in Jesus Christ alone, then there is no need to question your salvation, you are secured in him.

Don't doubt your salvation

To doubt the security of your salvation dishonors the finished work of Christ. If you think that you can lose your salvation, then you are implying that Jesus Christ is not powerful enough to save you eternally unto himself. God doesn't want you to doubt your salvation, but he wants you to have full assurance of your salvation in Christ Jesus. When we were sinners, God reached out and saved us by his grace, so what makes you think that now that he has saved us, that he will lose us in anyway. Assurance according to the dictionary means freedom from doubt. Your salvation is secure, therefore do not give room for doubt, for God wants you to know that you are saved, because you are truly saved.

God wants you to have assurance of your salvation

There are many promises of assurance of salvation for the born again christian, encapsulated in God's word. Let us dive into some of those scriptures: Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8: 1). In Christ, you will never be condemned for your sins, because all your punishment have been borne by Jesus on the cross, therefore have assurance of your salvation. Jesus said: My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand (John 10: 27-29).

We have double security for our salvation, because the members of the trinity are equally involved in securing our salvation. In the book of Hebrews, it is written: Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them (Hebrews 7: 25). Jesus saves to the uttermost or forever those who come to God through him, why? Because he lives forever to intercede for them, and his intercession secures their salvation. In the epistle of John it is also written: These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life (1 John 5: 13). God wants us to know, and not to doubt that we have eternal life. God in his grace has given us numerous passages in his word to assure us of the security of our salvation.

Your salvation is eternally secure

Of a truth, as a Christian it is impossible to lose your salvation. There are irrefutable evidences in God's word which gives us the confidence that we are saved once and for all time. In the book of first John, it is written: These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. (1 John 5: 13). John by the Spirit wants us to know that we have eternal life. Eternal life means life which endures forever. If this life can be lost, then it means it's not really eternal as the bible teaches. But eternal means eternal, we have received an indestructible life by faith in Christ Jesus. God wants us to know beyond reasonable doubt, that we have eternal life which depicts the fact that our salvation is eternally secure, therefore, have assurance of your salvation.

Immerse yourself in God's word

Whenever you are tempted to doubt your salvation, quickly immerse yourself in God's word. Meditate on the scriptures which speaks of the security of your salvation. Any teaching which robs the believer's assurance of salvation, is not in unison with the truth of the gospel. Peradventure, even when you fall into sin, that sin itself is not powerful enough to make you lose your salvation. Never doubt your salvation, because you still have right standing with God. Give yourself wholly to the scriptures, and be conscious of the security of your salvation and that knowledge will enable you to love Jesus even more, and also to live for his glory.

A thought to ponder 🤔

Any teaching which robs the believer's assurance of salvation is not in unison with the truth of the gospel.

We defend and exposit the truth of the gospel
